The above reference does not contain any further information on Francis B. Viele or his descendants. Thus, the majority of the information contained below is from other sources as stated.
1. Francis Viele was born 14 Jan 1816 and died in 1874. He married Betsey Carlton who was born about about 1814 in NY. Francis settled in Indian Lake in the 1840s and was listed as a farmer in both the 1850 and 1860 census in Indian Lake, Hamilton county, NY, but was listed as a physician in the 1870 census in Queensbury, Warren county, NY. Perhaps he was also a physician at Indian Lake but also farmed in order to earn a decent living for his rather large family as the Indian Lake community was not that large and may not have supported a full-time physician. In 1853 he was a school district trustee and as there was yet no school house the committee had to get it built. They were members of the Cedar river Mission (Methodist) when it was first organized in 1859.
Francis Viele and Betsey Carlton had the following children: 1.1. Gurdon Viele, b. about 1842, d. 14 Nov 1862. He is also listed as Gardner, Guerden, Gardon, etc.. 1.2. Sarah Viele, b. about 1843 1.3. Leander Viele, b. about 1846, d. 16 Jan 1864. 1.4. Mariah/Louisa Viele, b. about 1848, m. a Johnson and had son William (1870 census: age 8 mos.) 1.5. Cornelia Viele, b. about 1853 (1860 census: male, 1870 census: female) 1.6. Francis Viele, b. about 1854, probably died before 1870 as he's not in this census record. 1.7. Esther Viele, b. about 1856 1.8. Asker Viele, b. about 1858, probably died before 1870 as he's not in this census record. 1.9. Laura Viele, b. about 1860 (1860 census: Leander, male, 4 mos. old, 1870 census: Laura, female, age 10) 1.10. Nellie Viele, b. about 1866It appears that all the male children of Francis and Betsey died either in the Civil War or as children.

She was married about 1873 to Conrad Sherring who was born in Sep 1848 in NY. His parents were from/born in Germany. In 1880 they are living in Elizabeth, Union Co., NJ. Her mother Betsey Viele is residing with them as well as Mary Sherring, a sister of Conrad's. Conrad is listed in 1880 as a U.S. Detective in 1900 as a "Agent or Investigator but not a Detective" and in 1910 he is a Collector for a Gas Company. Cornelia is a Dressmaker in 1910.
