    Wallace Lawrence
1st cousin once removed of Roswell's

    2. Wallace4 Lawrence [Oscar3, John2, Edmund1] was born Mar 1876 in Day, Saratoga, NY, a son of Oscar Lawrence and Polly A. of Conklingville, Saratoga, NY in 1880. He died in 1921 before 27 Mar 1921 as he died while he was the town of Wells superintendent and his position was villed by Orville Lawrence on this date. He is buried in the Wells cemetery. He was married about 1894 to Francis Stanyon. She was born in Mar 1877 and died after 1930. Wallace was a farmer living in Wells in 1900; on Wells road in the town of Lake Pleasant in the 1910; still in Lake Pleasant in 1915; and on the Main Road in the town of Wells in 1920.

Wallace and Fannie Stanyon Lawrence lived on a farm right at the edge of the Village of Wells. According to Ermina Pincombe there was an old trail that went through the woods from Wells off toward Saratoga and Warren Counties. Her grandfather [Morrison] and the Lawrences were among those who used it to go in that direction. Ermina's grandfather went because he was a teacher, the Lawrence family, she does not know for sure.

According to Harry Buyce, one day Fannie was pushing her grandson down the main street with a carriage. A car struck and killed her - the baby was unharmed.

Wallace Lawrence and Francis Stanyon had the following children:
2.1. Reverend Oscar W. Lawrence, born Jan 1895 in Wells, Hamilton, NY.
2.2. Orville W. Lawrence, born 7 Jan 1897 in Wells, Hamilton, NY.

2.1. Oscar W. Lawrence was born 28 Jan 1895 in Wells, Hamilton, NY. He died May 1965 and is buried in the Wells cemetery. He was married on 20 Feb 1915 to Eva Buyce a daughter of Adelbert Buyce and Charlotte Morrison (recorded in Hamilton county clerk office). Eva was born May 1895 and died 1973.

In 1917 Oscar was a Glove Cutter and residing in Mayfield, Fulton, NY. In 1920 he is listed as a silk weaver in a silk mill and Eva is listed as a glove maker at home. They are residing in Gloversville. In 1930 Oscar is a minister for the Pilgrim Holiness church in Syracuse, Onondaga, NY. In 1943 they are living in Binghamton, NY.

When young, Ermina Pincombe and her family [the mother anyway] both attended the Pilgrim Holiness Church in Wells. When Ermina was a kid and went to the PH church in Wells there was a minister, and always visiting ministers. In those days, when they formed this church, people who were really interested could practice preaching to the elders and then go on and preach in church itself. Like anything else, those that were good rose to the top. That was the way it was all over America in that religion. Ermina said that Oscar fit right in that top category - he was a very, very, good public speaker and believed in his mission. The next step, in upstate NY, was for those apprentice speakers to attend a "school" called Victory Grove in Albany, NY to preach before the elders, or people in command anyway. She is certain that Oscar did this.

The next step, and of this she is not positive that Oscar did; would be to attend the Allentown Bible Institute in Allentown, Pa. This was apparently their national school, where one could become ordained. She felt that the school in Albany might also be able to confer ordination. In any event, however he got it, Oscar was an ordained minister of considerable promise and talent. He and Eva did not live in Wells long, most of his life was spent in the western part of the state. His particular niche in the church was that of evangelicalism. He was an invited speaker at churches far and wide [exactly how far and wide Ermina is not sure, but he was treated with much respect by all]. Apparently they chose to be buried in the Methodist Cemetery because Wells was truly home for both. They have a nice gravesite.

2.2 Orville Lawrence was born 7 Jan 1897 in NY. He died in May 1968 and is buried in Wells cemetery. He was married on 25 Dec 1920 in Northville, NY to Madeline E. Clouthier a daughter of Napoleon and Hattie Clouthier (according to Hamilton county clerk office). She was born in Feb 1900 in NY and died in 1929 and is buried in Wells cemetery. A close family member, Katherine born about 1910, was raised by Orville. In the 1920 census she is listed as a daughter of Wallace. In the 1930 census she is listed as a daughter of Orville. Orville's wife is deceased, his mother who is also widowed is living with him and helping with his 4 young children, while Katherine is a teacher in a rural school. Orville was the town superintendent for Lake Pleasant in 1921 and town superintendent for Wells in 1929. Orville's son, Orville Lawrence Jr., was in WWII and is also buried in Wells cemetery.
