Additional Information from Various Sources

Source: "Tales of an Adirondack County," by Ted Aber and Stella King, 1978, Prospect Books, Box 57, Prospect, New York, pages 152-3

"Probably no name is more closely associated with the Southern Adirondack region than that of Lawrence. It was from the land-owning Lawrences of New York City that many of the earlies settlers of the area acquired their acreage. It is from descendants of these New York land-holders that many have gained even richer reward. The earlier Lawrences conveyed land; the later Lawrences conveyed lore. Some of the most memorable experiences of a host of Adirondack visitors are attributed to these ample woodsmen and capable guides."

"When Marinus Lawrence first came to the mountains with Peter, his father, in 1846, he brought with him a love for woodsmnship and hunting that was the heritage of his fine old American stock. He called himself a farmer, and farmer he was; but like so many of his neighbors, he was happiest when he was tramping the woodland trails. And after he had married James Scidmore's daughter, Phoebe, and they had raised their family of five sons and three daughters, that same inheritance had been passed to each of the boys."

"All five were guides at various times, as adept at dealing with demanding sportsmen as at scaring up elusive woodland game. And the Lawrence hunting camp at Pillsbury Lake, so ably run for so many years by Sam and Elizabeth Satterlee Lawrence, is still in the family's hands."

"But probably none is more widely known for preserving the traditions of the Adirondacks than Frank A. Lawrence, fourth of Marinus' and Phoebe's sons."

The text then goes on in detail about Frank A. Lawrence through page 159.

page 307: "Following his [Cheney's] death, Cheney's store and dwelling on Court Street, Piseco Village, was sold for mortgage to Abraham R. Lawrence on November 13, 1852."

page 637: "Abraham Ryder Lawrence of the wealthy New York family of Lawrence thought so. [thought more and more vacationers would be coming to the Adirondacks] A son of Jonathan Lawrence, who had owned so much land throughout the State, he himself had acquired much land and had benefited financially from its development. He was familiar with the Adirondacks through the early interest of his family in property there, and his own nephew, Peter, and Peter's son, Marinus Lawrence, had been living at Lake Pleasant for the past several years. Furthermore, as president since 1836 of the New York and Harlem Railroad, Abraham Ryder Lawrence could foresee people soon being carried readily to all parts of the country." It goes on to say that on March 21, 1845, he purchased land to build a large summer hotel, but the venture was soon abandoned.
