Durand Family

This is NOT intended to be a COMPLETE record. It is however, a study of this family taken primarily from sources available online on various free and fee sites. 1. George H. Durand was born about 1816 and died 19 Nov 1895 at Saginaw, MI. He married Margaret who was born about 1828 in NY and died in Nov 1880. George was minister of the Methodist Episcopal church. George and his family are found in the 1850 census of Morehouse, having lived there from about 1844 to 1852. In 1858 the family moved to MI going first to Genesee county then to Flint and in 1863 to Saginaw, MI. They had the following children:

1.2. Alonzo Durand was born about 1842, NY
1.3. Margaret A. Durand was born about 1845, NY, m. John Phelps Williams of Chicago
1.4. Lorenzo Thurston Durand was born 9 Dec 1849 in Morehouse, Hamilton Co., NY

    1.1. George Harmon Durand, son of George H. and Margaret McMillan Durand, was married in Aug 1858 in Minden, NY to Sarah A. Benson, daughter of Rev. Jonathan Benson of Monroe county, NY. She was born in Nov 1833. George died 8 Jun 1903. Sarah died 29 Aug 1918. Two children Charles A. Durand (b. Sep 1860) and Elizabeth A. Durand (b. Aug 1863, d. 11 Sep 1917). Both children were single in the 1910 census.

    DURAND, George Harman, a Representative from Michigan; born in Cobleskill, Schoharie County, N.Y., February 21, 1838; attended the common schools and Genesee Wesleyan Seminary at Lima, N.Y.; moved to Oxford, Oakland County, Mich., in 1856; taught school; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice at Flint, Genesee County, Mich., in 1858; member of the board of education; member of the board of aldermen 1862-1867; mayor of Flint in 1873 and 1874; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1875-March 3, 1877); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1876 to the Forty-fifth Congress; resumed the practice of his profession; appointed temporarily justice of the Michigan Supreme Court in 1892; presidential elector on the Democratic ticket of Cleveland and Stevenson in 1892; president of the Michigan State Bar Association in 1893; president of the State board of law examiners for many years; appointed special assistant United States attorney in Chinese and opium smuggling cases in Oregon and served from 1898 to 1896; died in Flint, Mich., June 8, 1903; interment in Glenwood Cemetery.

    1.4. Lorenzo Thurston Durand was born 9 Dec 1849 at Morehouseville, Hamilton county, NY, a son of George H. and Margaret (McMillan) Durand. Lorenzo married in 1872 to Miss Florence C. Moore, daughter of Hon. John Moore, of Saginaw. She was born in Oct 1850. They have one child, Carrie M. who graduated from the Saginaw High School, class of 1891. She was born in Dec 1872 and was single in 1900.
